There is an old saying, you never miss what you have until its gone. Those words were never more true when it comes to Tales of Ta'veren MUSH. What is Tales of Ta'veren MUSH? Well, picture an interactive novel, a version of Robert Jordan's epic series The Wheel of Time that you were able to log into and interact with, play Daes Dae'mar with bickering nobles of every nationality, take tea with a haughty Aes Sedai, watch battles and feuds occur outside your front door, get caught up in the fate-twisting influence of a ta'veren. It was all of that and much more.
Originally, I had no idea what a MUSH even was (Multi User Something Or Other), and I had no intentions whatsoever of getting involved in yet another online hobby, but I was drawn to Tales of Ta'veren (Tales for short) by its Worldbook, a lovingly created resource that detailed the nations and cultures represented in the series, which were also recreated to an uncanny accurate degree on the game. The Worldbook was so well thought out and maintained that I figured I had to see what the MUSH was all about.
And from there, I was hooked. The MUSH staff was so helpful and considerate to a total neophyte like me, their training and theme resources were endless and superb, and the players themselves were amazing and witty, like I just wandered into a room of long lost friends I didn't even know I had.
As a new player I watched the intrigue and diabolical goings-on of House Ildevwyn, a sinister and notorious Cairhienin house, which had a presence in the online area of Tar Valon. Led by Lady Ibaethien and her assistant Lady Cionaeve, they were so much fun to watch I decided that I wanted in on their fun. But then, I was hit by an idea! Instead of joining their house, why not create a rival house of my own? It was from that thought that House Vanderode was born, a Cairhienin house brought low by treachery, its ranks thinned by poison and the assassin's blade, a house led by a woman chastened by scandal and danger, Saralleine Caelle, who worried for the safety of her children while she dabbles in power struggles and intrigue. What can I say, one of my favorite books is The Count of Monte Cristo, and I just extrapolated that to an entire noble family! Revenge is sweetest when it takes years to attain!
The resources on the MUSH were stupendous and the staff, namely Alderic (area leader of Tar Valon) and Callandor (the administrator for the noble houses called the 'Wizard') were so helpful and full of suggestions that it was a breeze to bring the house to life. In no time, other players joined the house, Araine, a niece who enrolled as a novice in the Tower, both Lilavaeres (two players of the same character), my hoyden of a daughter, Ryles, my nephew and Araine's twin, with a channeling curse, the players of my sons, Paetrid and Thomaenes, Erienna, my long lost cousin, a fey maiden with a gift for sensuous poetry. Daenielle, who was the head house keeper, and also my bastard sister, and many more. My brother Benjaen, and his rascal of a son, Evaen. In time, as my real life started to draw my attention, more and more, Araine took over as co-leader, and finally OOC leader of the House, even revamping the house pages. Lastly, although we interacted very rarely, I am indebted to Paelitar, who joined as my hitherto unknown brother, and ended up in a spectacular romance with and ultimately marriage to the Amyrlin Seat herself! It provided jolts of interest and creativity that I appreciated very much.
Sad to say, I soon got caught up in real life, though, with a wedding to plan and a move from one city to another. Saralleine and her burgeoning, yet fictional, family had to take a back seat to all that. When I finally got resettled, I was saddened to learn that Tales was on its last legs. All of those marvelous staffers were working for free, and had to devote their precious time and energies to outside endeavors, much like myself. They simply couldn't keep up with the demands of running a thriving MUSH, and who can blame them? I understood, but I felt like I was a little girl being forced to move to a new town, switching schools, losing all my friends.
And now it is gone. I recall website upon website that displayed Tales' content, logs of role-play, sites created for the varying noble houses and individual characters, informational websites about nations, Ajahs and societies, disappearing off the web like dead leaves falling off a tree. I decided that I would preserve my own little bit of that, the pages for House Vanderode, and would like to invite any of the former players to contact me and send me little passages detailing your memories and impressions. While not much, this is my own small attempt and preserving what a great way to lose yourself in a novel, make new friends, and engage your creativity.

Sites Maintained by Sarah Hough, player of Lady Saralleine:
- I have resurrected the webpage for
House Vanderode, and added the textual descriptions I saved of the House possessions, homes and interior rooms.
- While I was at it, I also created a page for House Moendivell, a vassal and ally of Vanderode to which several players belonged, although there never was a separate organization for it. It was basically a house branch.
- I am also creating individual pages for the characters that I played, and those of my friends whom I remain in touch with:
Links for Tales Resources, Characters and Organizations, and those Inspired by Tales:
(Many of these are for organizations and characters that originated on Tales, but have been transplanted elseMU*, and others are new creations, inspired by the intricately detailed world of Tales, with the blessings of some of their original creators and/or sources of inspiration).
- I was scouring the web, and encountered Melissa Kell's (Tale's Admin Light) own efforts at preservation. Her Memorial to Tales site is classy and welcoming, with the high level of quality the habitués of Tales came to expect. This is the Official Tales Tribute Page. All Hail Light! Particularly nice are her huge collection of role-play logs (both on-site and links to other collections) and the State of the World indexes, a year by year chronology of in-character international events and personal developments.
- The page of Gray Aes Sedai Raziah ibn Sulamaad, born a lady of House Sulamaad and daughter of my friend Lady Benasir.
- Speaking of which, Corinne, the player of Lady Benasir, has agreed to restore the lovely House Sulamaad homepage to the internet (at my repeated pestering). I always thought that their site was one of the most attractive. House Sulamaad's presence was established in Tar Valon when Raziah enrolled in the Tower; her mother transplanted much her family and household with her so she could stay near her favored child. Sulamaad's webpage was rich and displayed detailed family trees linking the great houses of Tarabon. House Sulamaad had several affiliated houses, as well.
- House Ramayaad, the ancestral house of Lord Tadziq, Lady Benasir's beloved consort.
- House Mohamaar, a smaller house historically intertwined with Sulamaad by marriage, and closely tied to the Tarabonner royal family. Lady Elbendrin, the wife of its High Seat, Lord Damahr, was twin sister to Delandrin Esthad, Queen of Tarabon.
- House Sahudaan, a notorious house of decadence and dishonesty, personified by the callow and narcissistic Lord Sahman Anad ibn Sahudaan.
- The page of my "long lost" daughter Lilavaere Vanderode, along with commentary and logs. Also featured are logs and biographies of of Lil's other alt-characters. A very attractive website, well beyond my rudimentary skills in html.
- NEW - The Andoran Court Bard Dane has compiled a collection of old logs of performances by various gleeman and bard characters on Tales over the years.
- Rashan, the former Wizard Callandor, has his own page trying to record the pages of various Tales Organizations. Unfortunately, it seems to be badly out of date.
- To my delight, I have found The Blue Ajah page, which was maintained by Perseinde.
- In addition, Perseinde is hosting (and appears to have created) web pages for the Red Ajah, and the White Ajah. As part of those sites, Perseinde is also displaying personal websites for the following Aes Sedai characters:
- Hazine Quoriff, Damara Salines, Caizelle Sarvejian, Eilande Fioneiven andGuensin Aniches, Aes Sedai of the Red Ajah.
- Simoene Alvaewhin and Suraya Ashalde, Aes Sedai of the White Ajah.
- Jeine Marelan, Aigan Nimwey, Dareleine Nosaevin and Noriko Shetsuma, Aes Sedai of the Gray Ajah.
- Miriana Tetsobar, and
Tianan Tanches, Aes Sedai of the Green Ajah.
- Calandrin Ibanaad, Arella Dioman, Roisene Meriodred and Tezanya Vadanyar, Aes Sedai of the Yellow Ajah.
- In addition to Tianan's web-page, Tianan and Rigan, another Green sister, has created the extremely stylish
Roster of the Battle Ajah, a Green Ajah website.
- NEW - Katherielle Dorhasu has created the Archives of the Brown Ajah, and has moved own page and that of her sister Browns Ehlianon Matsuri and Liawen Murannin over to that site.
- Fortunately, the webpage for House Hune, a powerful Andoran house, is still up on the web. House Hune was closely tied with the Andoran royal family on Tales, and Lady Rennar, the House Leader has a trove of logged role play on her site. I always admired Rennar's ability to run such a burgeoning house and keep everyone happy.
House Hune was also active on Cuendillar MUSH (see below), with independent plots and story lines.
- Lady Caprice was an alt of Althea Sedai, who I believe was also the Tales Wizard Mashiara, and she was an Altaran noblewoman who resided in Tar Valon. She opened the NPC house of House Corsobar, and she also created its handsome webpage. I never interacted much with Caprice or the Corsobars, but they seemed like great fun.
- Not having an Aes Sedai or even Accepted alt-character, I was only vaguely aware of Caenna, a Sheinaran Aes Sedai, but I was aware that she had exploits and adventures. Here is her webpage.
- Alcoran Belmond was an orphan who was taken in by Lady Carinae Belmond, and in time, he created the Valavendil, a band of adventurers, treasure-seekers and some-time heroes. Their webpage contains a roster and logs of their role-play. Water Flows!
- Marvelous news! I have made contact with the players of Alderic and Cionaeve of Tales, and firstly and foremostly, they're engaged to be married! (note: they may be married by now. I first contacted them in 2003 - SH) Oh, the delicious irony of it all, the stalwart Andivell magnate and the wily, treacherous Ildevwyn vixen! Also, of secondary note, the two of them have placed at my disposal their collected trove of material for the following:
- Andivell Household - the wealthy mercantile family of Tar Valon, led by High Councillor Alderic, which hosted many a soigne ball at their home, as well as engaged in many exciting affairs and events.
- Patreine's Salon - an exclusive academy in Tar Valon, run by the Headmistress Patreine Andivell, it was a school for young women to learn the 'graceful arts,' as well as receive a well rounded education. The students were always up to mischief, the instructors steeped in intrigue.
- House Ildevwyn - the premier decadent and duplicitous Cairhienin house, a demimonde of debauchery, its denizens were the masters of subtle scheming and ruthless seduction, as well as just being bloodless and creepy. House Ildevwyn was originally conceived of and led by the regal and wintry Lady Ibaethien, who turned it over to Lady Cionaeve, a self-styled 'predatory ingenue', who in turned passed it on to Igraesor, the meticulous and canny 'Lord of the Gardens.' (now moved to its own domain to preserve the name)
- House Zadnere - this house of randy, boisterous Saldaeans was initially set in Tales' Fal Moran area, a transplanted enclave of Saldaeans serving the Ambassador to Sheinar, but later relocated the entire embassage to Tar Valon. The leader was initially Adram (an alt of Alderic's) who was succeeded by Jasne, his IC daughter. House Zadnere, being a creation of Alderic/Adram, was amazingly rich in detail and had three affiliated houses:
- House Savedra, the house of Adram's wife, the redoubtable Lady Isebaille, of which she was lady in her own right.
- House Ladzani, a vassal of House Savedra, into which Lady Isebaille's sister, Lady Mareda, married into and governed in regency for her minor children.
- House Korenze, the awesome Royal House of Saldaea, the 'Chamber of Scorpions,' into which Lady Laideine, Adram's mother was born as a princess, and ruled over by Queen Beah Casnya.
- House Belmond - a lesser Andoran House, it was led by Margiel (an alt of Patreine, I believe) and dabbled in espionage and Daes Dae'mar. Its manor in Caemlyn served as a safehouse for the Red Circle.
- The Red Circle - a covert organization of agents sworn to protect and defend Tar Valon and the White Tower, with a varied membership and sundry activities. It's titular leader was Alderic, but varying players actually ran it from time to time.
- Three Oaks House - A boarding house in Tar Valon run by Maiane, a gathering place for wayfarers, rogues and adventurers of all sorts.
- The original site for the White Tower area is back up on the web, replete with its detailed and thoughtful lesson plans for novices and Accepted, an extensive timeline detailing Tower history, and much in-character lore and resources.
- House Dhamsid, an gracious bastion of Domani nobles inside Tar Valon was led by the mysterious Lady Dareane, and her daughter Lady Eshira. I never had much opportunity to role-play with the Dhamsids, but I did help Dareane develop her ideas for her House, and the web-page she designed was elegant and beautiful, much like Dareane herself.
- Speaking of Lady Dareane, she and Lady Eshira's player have created there own marvellous Tales tribute site, Memories of Ta'veren, with a neat side menu linking to individual customized pages recording information for various characters. It's incomplete, but when complete it looks to be really spectacular!
- Her Majesty, Queen Aislynn of House Versyr was the area-leader of Tales' Caemlyn area, as well as the head of her own house, the Royal House of Versyr. Aislynn's player has a personal page for the character of the queen, as well as a more general page for House Versyr itself. It seems that Aislynn has grafted her house into the timeline of another Wheel of Time themed MUSH, Daes Dae'mar MUSH. I dealt with Aislynn's character a few times, when Lady Saralleine contacted her to assist in returning my amnesiac niece Erienna from Caemlyn. Aislynn seemed to run Caemlyn well, always keeping it filled with activity and plots.
- NEW - House Roesone has been found! House Roesone was an Andoran House that was always swimming with intrigue and romance amid the high politics in Caemlyn. I recall Roesone chiefly for the grand romance between Lord Corwin and Lady Ravenna, who were the founders of the house, but other members loomed large on the stage as well. I think their page is very sleek and stylish. House Roesone also transplanted itself to Cuendillar MUSH.
- NEW - House Cordaevell As a bit of self-indulgence, I have cobbled together the resources and materials that I have been able to gather off the web and from former players and have created a site for House Cordaevell, the royal house of Cairhien and will be using it as a prototype for a new MUSH that I am working with others to develop, the Concordat of Illian. The Lady of House Cordaevell is the young, unmarried Queen of Cairhien, Healle Marielle, who is advised by her elderly uncle, Lord Calvaenes.
- NEW - House Rhiaghan one of the 'big four' Houses in Cairhien, House Rhiaghan is governed by the ribald and lusty Lord Vailengil, once a Crown Marshall to the Sun Crown of Cairhien, now royal ambassador to Queen Ewelyne of House Aurand, the Queen of Andor on the Concordat of Illian. Like its patriarch, House Rhiaghan is notorious for its exploits in the pursuits of excitement and pleasure, especially at the prim, refined court in Caemlyn.
- House Rhiaghan also has its own vassal houses: House Belovinde, a house of renowned warriors, governed by the implacable Lady Solande, and House Morgaedred, a especially secretive house, directed by the enigmatic Lord Aldergail.
- NEW - House Daraghain, the last of the 'big four' Cairheinin Houses, is a former royal house, thrust down by its enemies and removed from power. Profoundly wealthy, they rule from their gleaming white stronghold, Shen'dareis Allen (the Hill of Silver Spears), and use their wealth to influence affairs well beyond their walls, and are certainly not above bribery and extortion. The High Seat of Daraghain is currently held jointly by serenely treacherous siblings, Lady Silvaere and Lord Silvaenes.
- House Daraghain had its own vassal families, most notably, House Sollevien, lead by the elderly Lady Beldaene, grandmother of the twin High Seats of Daraghain.
- NEW - As mentioned above, the Royal House of Andor on Concordat of Illian is the splendid House Aurand, presided over by Queen Ewelyne I of House Aurand, the Prince Consort Pauwel, and the Daughter-Heir of Andor, Lady Maigred. Queen Ewelyne's court is full of competing and rivalrous dignitaries, even as the queen herself is disdainful of her own Aes Sedai advisor, and seems to be receptive to the overtures of Amador. To complicate matters greatly, Queen Ewelyne rules only after a nasty struggle against her elder half-sister, the ruthless Lady Elsivian of House Govanyn, who deems herself the rightful queen, and maintains a rival court on her own estates and has raised her spiteful daughter, Lady Elinwey, to consider herself the Daughter-Heir.
- NEW - House Tiamaro found! - During one of my incessant web-trawling episodes, I came across a page for one of the incarnations of the mighty and machevillian Tairen house House Tiamaro, which seems to have flowered into its newest form on Tales II.
Missing Organizations and Houses:
(I am looking out for any tidbits still in existence for any of the following)
- House Vorneyo: A noble house of Arafel, with its main presence in Caemlyn, although they had representation in Tar Valon as well. The only Vorneyo character with whom I had any contact, Lady Belisune, has her small character bio page here.
- House Divora: A noble house of Tear, which was set in Tar Valon, mostly. I may be remembering the name wrongly, though.
- The Black Suns Cartel: The 'Thieves Guild' of Tar Valon, very secretive and enigmatic with a subterranean headquarters in the city's sewers.
- The House of the Golden Goblet: An Altaran mercantile house, importers and distillers of fine brandies and liqueurs, admirably lead by Mistress Davrine Methraine and her excitable family.
- The House of the Blue Stars: A mercantile enterprise run by the Doraney family, headed up by its matriarch Mistress Morian Doraney. They were weavers and dyers, and hosted many elegant balls and entertaining outdoor gatherings.
Miscellaneous Links:
- The "successor" of Tales of Ta'veren, Tales of Ta'veren II. I tried to get into it when it first was launched from the demise of Tales, but it didn't "click" for me. The central theme was that the Dragon Reborn, not quite ready to appear when Tales I closed, had appeared and begun to control nations, and the Tales world and timeline was accelerated so that the ramifications of that could be joined in medias res. It seems to have drifted way, itself, sadly.
- The pages that got me hooked in the first place, The Tales of Ta'veren Worldbook, adoringly created by Rhonda Peters, (the Wizard Saidar on Tales) now hosted by Cuendillar MUSH, a sister game of Tales which welcomed many Tales refugees. It maintained its own timeline and continuity, but was most alike in theme and spirit, according to those who played on both that I spoke to.
- Two former Tales players, Elio García and Linda Antonson, now maintain the fantastic www.westeros.com, a vast site dedicated to The Song of Ice and Fire series by author George R.R. Martin.
- They also are developing a MUSH, Blood of Dragons, based upon that series.
- I also like to read the Encyclopedia WOT, a great resource of characters, chapter summaries, geography and other tidbits, all cross-referenced in hypertext, and now adorned with fan illustrations.
